Functional brakes and steering are non-negotiable for forklift safety. Test service brakes by applying them gently while moving slowly to ensure they engage promptly and stop the vehicle effectively. Check the parking brake to confirm it holds the forklift in place when engaged, even on a slight incline. Inspect the steering wheel for excessive play or stiffness, which could signal steering mechanism problems. Any irregularities in braking or steering should be reported immediately, and the forklift taken out of service until repairs are completed.
For electric forklifts, inspect battery connections for corrosion or loose wires, and ensure the battery is fully charged per manufacturer guidelines. For gas or diesel-powered models, check fuel levels and inspect fuel lines for leaks. Move to the operator station to verify controls—lift lever, tilt lever, horn—function correctly. Ensure the seatbelt is in good condition and latches properly, as it protects operators in case of tip-overs. Also, clear debris from the compartment that could interfere with control operation.
Before starting the shift, conduct a brief operational test in a designated area. Drive slowly, test lift and tilt functions with a light load, and confirm safety features like overhead guards and load backrests are in place and working.
