Before starting any on-site solid forklift tire replacement, prioritizing safety is non-negotiable. First, park the forklift on a flat, stable surface and engage the parking brake to prevent unintended movement. Next, chock the wheels opposite the one being replaced to add an extra layer of stability. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including heavy-duty gloves, safety goggles and steel-toe boots, to protect against potential injuries from heavy components or debris. Gather all necessary tools: a hydraulic jack rated for the forklift’s weight, tire pry bars, torque wrench, lubricant, and a tire bead breaker to ensure a smooth process.
Once safety preparations are complete, begin removing the old tire. Start by slightly lifting the forklift with the hydraulic jack, just enough to take weight off the target tire. Locate the wheel nuts and loosen them using a torque wrench, but do not fully remove them yet—this prevents the wheel from shifting when lifted higher. If the tire is stuck, apply a small amount of lubricant to the rim edge to ease the process, but avoid over-lubricating as it can cause slipping during installation.
Installing the new solid tire requires careful alignment. Start by applying a thin layer of lubricant to the inner bead of the new tire and the rim edge to aid fitting. Align the tire with the rim, ensuring any directional markings match the forklift’s forward movement direction. Use pry bars to carefully work the tire onto the rim, making sure the bead seats properly all around. Avoid using excessive force that could damage the tire or rim; if resistance is high, recheck alignment and lubrication.
Once the tire is seated on the rim, reattach the wheel assembly to the forklift axle. Hand-tighten the wheel nuts initially, then lower the forklift back to the ground gradually. Use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts to the specified torque setting—this is critical to prevent loose nuts that could lead to accidents during operation.
After installation, conduct a thorough post-replacement check. Inspect the tire to ensure it is properly seated with no gaps or misalignment. Test the forklift by moving it slowly forward and backward, checking for unusual noises or vibrations. Verify that the tire rotates smoothly and does not rub against any forklift components.
