Keep the battery compartment clean to avoid short circuits, and check the charging cable for fraying or damage. A faulty power system disrupts operations and poses electrical hazards.
Test operational controls while the forklift is stationary. Turn on the ignition and check the steering wheel for smooth movement without excessive play. Test the foot and parking brakes to confirm the vehicle stays in place with no unusual noises or delays. Verify lift and tilt controls work smoothly, and ensure the horn is loud enough to alert nearby workers. Check mirrors for proper alignment and cleanliness to maintain surrounding visibility.
Confirm all safety devices function correctly. Ensure the seatbelt is intact and works as intended, as it prevents ejection during sudden stops or tip-overs. Inspect the overhead guard for damage, as it protects against falling objects. Verify the load backrest extension is secure to stop loads sliding backward onto the operator. Check safety interlocks, such as the seat switch that blocks operation if the operator is not seated.
Finally, start the forklift and let it run briefly to listen for unusual motor or hydraulic noises. Report any identified issues immediately to maintenance and do not operate the forklift until repairs are done. Document inspection results in a logbook, noting defects or needed repairs. This ensures regulatory compliance and tracks maintenance history to spot recurring problems.
